A Child’s Place

How we erase the impact of Homelessness on Children and Their Education:

A Child’s Place serves homeless children in Mecklenburg County and provides them education, which is critical to ending poverty and homelessness.  That’s why a Child’s Place has Social Work Teams in six public elementary schools and two middle schools in Mecklenburg County attended by high numbers of homeless students. At each school, site ACP student liaisons ensure client children have the day-to-day tools necessary to learn—from clothing to schools supplies, to snacks and tutors. Workers help homeless identify community resources to address the issues behind their housing crisis.  A typical client family of A Child’s Place includes two or three children and has at least one working adult when they become homeless.

  • Homeless kids change schools frequently, losing up to three months of academic achievement with each move.
  • June 2010, CMS reported 4,453 students who are homeless are enrolled in CMS schools.
  • Roughly 45% of the client children currently with A Child’s Place are at least one grade level behind their peers.
  • Homeless children are sick twice as often as other children.

Why A Child’s Place Works:

  • ACP Programs – Student support, academic support, parent education and support and My Place summer day camp.
  • Education – 93% of our client children are promoted to the next grade compared to 64% of homeless children nationally.
  • Safety – Our My Place summer day camp provided academic, enrichment and fun for 51 homeless students while school was out.
  • Vision – ACP’s 2013 Strategic Plan will expand our service capacity so every homeless child in Mecklenburg County will get the help they need.

“Dear friend, when you extend hospitality (charity) to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible.” –
